SmartEye parking space occupancy sensors ensure fair shares and a steady turnover of visitors to the town of Taupo’s downtown retail and tourism district.

The challenge

Taupo, on the north shore of Lake Taupo in the North Island of New Zealand, is a popular year round tourist destination for New Zealanders and international visitors alike. Its attractiveness means that the council, while wishing to switch from paid to free parking to ensure that Taupo reinforced its popularity as a tourist destination, wanted to make this time restricted to maximise access and ensure a steady turnover of occupancy. Traditional compliance however would have meant deploying Parking Enforcement Officers to chalk tyres and monitor busy streets.

The solution

The council turned to Smart Parking to deploy almost 900 of its SmartEye parking space occupancy sensors in Taupo’s central retail area, along with infringement handheld devices and SmartRep reporting and analysis software. Each SmartEye sensor, embedded in-ground, detects as a space is occupied and vacated. The occupancy timing and status of each bay is relayed in real time to SmartRep, which then updates to the enforcement officer’s handheld, enabling penalties to be issued where infringements occur consistently and fairly.

The result

The solution has helped Taupo significantly reduce its problem of parking overstayers, and given the council access to data to adjust parking restriction times in a way that benefits the town’s businesses.

There was no other product like it, or remotely near to its quality. We decided from a reporting point of view that it was going to be very useful for us. We haven’t needed consultants to tell us how the parking was in the town centre, because we have real-time reporting from Smart Parking’s sensors.
