Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary

Newcastle Hospitals Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) is situated in the heart of Newcastle’s city centre adjacent to the University. With over 200,000 patient and visitor journeys into the hospital every month, demand for car parking spaces is inevitably very high.

The challenge

The challenge

Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) has been providing healthcare to communities in Newcastle and the Noth East for over 250 years. The hospitals success has led to more patients, visitors and extra staff. As a result the size and scale of the hospital has created a strain on parking bays, which include disabled spaces, reserved bays for essential car users delivering community services but need to make frequent trips back to the hospital, and a short stay/drop-off area, which have all suffered from significant levels of abuse over a number of years.

Our solution

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust decided to utilise Smart Parking’s Bay Sensors as a solution to addressing parking issues in two of its car parks.

65 parking bays were allocated next to the Great North Childrens Hospital and New Victoria Wing, specifically for disabled users, for short stay drop-off and collection purposes and a taxi point.

The benefits

Smart Parking’s system helps us to manage spaces and is also an excellent monitoring tool to show just how spaces are being utilised.

The benefits

Parking is monitored and on the ground resources can be signposted to the car park to manage with any overstays, car park congestion and discourage the small minority of drivers who misuse the spaces.
