The Base Town Centre has rapidly become one of New Zealand’s busiest retail and leisure destinations, with annual visitors now exceeding 7.5 million. The popularity of The Base means increasing pressure on parking facilities. To reduce congestion, get maximum use from available space and increase shopping time for visitors, The Base needed a system that would guide drivers quickly and accurately to vacant parking bays.

Our solution

We installed a combination of SmartGuide and SmartEye technologies in the customer car parks. An individual SmartEye sensor installed in each bay registers whether the bay is occupied or vacant. This information is fed back to SmartGuide signage – large, clear, digital-display screens which let customers know how many spaces are available and give directions for locating them.  As well as giving guidance to drivers entering the car park, further screens display the number of free parking spaces down every aisle, at every driver decision point. Each vacant space is then identified by a clear, bright overhead sensor light, showing red for occupied and green for vacant.

The benefits

From our viewpoint, the technology, aligned with excellent support and insight from the Smart Parking team, has proved to be a very good investment. It has all added to the customer experience, and it also means that visitors spend less time looking for a space to park and more time in The Base, which is really good news for our tenants.

On arrival at the car park, drivers now find a space quickly and easily.  Congestion caused by visitors driving around, looking for a space is a thing of the past. The traffic flows efficiently and customers are less stressed and more satisfied with their overall experience of shopping and leisure at The Base. At busy periods, space use is maximised; SmartGuide ensures that visitors are alerted to all available spaces. The success of SmartGuide for customers has resulted in the system being extended to two staff car parks of 133 and 415 parking spaces.
