Auckland Transport, which is part of Auckland Council, provides a large proportion of parking facilities in the city.  Auckland is one of New Zealand’s largest and busiest conurbations so faces challenges in providing sufficient space and keeping traffic moving. A key challenge was to overcome the difficulties faced by drivers looking for a vacant parking space in three of the authority’s busiest car parks in Auckland’s Central Business District – The Civic, Downtown and Victoria Street.

Our solution

We created a tailor made solution, combining three technologies to tackle the challenge and transform the parking experience. We installed individual SmartEye sensors in each bay, which register whether the bay is occupied or vacant. This information is relayed live to SmartRep, Smart Parking’s powerful car parking management software tool, which collates and analyses the data. The information is relayed instantaneously to Smart Parking’s SmartGuide signage – large, clear, digital-display screens which let customers know how many spaces are available and give directions for locating them, throughout the car park, until the driver arrives at a vacant space.

SmartRep software data can also be used for future planning and to create further improvements as the need arises.

We required a system that would enable drivers to easily locate available parking spaces. We also sought a solution that would allow us to manage our car parks based upon occupancy. Customer satisfaction rates are high for this service, and this enhances our brand and customer reputation.

The benefits

The driver experience has been transformed in all three car parks. Time-to-park waits have been significantly reduced, as have emission levels. The installation of the system has also had a positive impact on driver perceptions of the facilities – an additional bonus for Auckland Transport.

In December 2015, Auckland Transport extended their investment in Smart Parking Technology by further enhancing their deployment of SmartGuide at their Victoria Street Car Park. This means that an additional 672 bays will now be easily identifiable, reducing congestion and improving customer satisfaction. Read about it here.
